It is an honour for me to have been asked to make this speech. But, like everyone else, I wish Alan hadn’t been deprived of his joyful privilege. How proud he would have been, escorting Linda to the altar. While preparing these few words, I’ve tried to conjecture what he might have said about Linda, and also what he wouldn’t say.

I never imagined that the pleasure of making a speech at Linda’s wedding would fall to me, her oldest cousin. I’ve known Linda nearly all her life but I know very little about Paul. What I do rely on, though, is Linda’s evaluation of him. If he was anything other than the likeable, generous and caring young man that he appears to anyone, then Linda never would have fallen for him.
